When Gap signed Sarah Jessica Parker for a reported $38 million three year deal to be its new pitchwoman, they had high expectations that the A-list star would bring more fashionista clients into their retail stores. But, that is precisely what didn't happen. In fact, sales fell.

On the face of it, the decline in sales made no sense. Parker was an "it" girl. How could she not sell? What Gap failed to foresee was that using Parker was an error in celebrity marketing judgment. For all her fame and for all her film success, she was still not right for their market. Over 40, Parker was not right for the younger, sportswear basics demographic. At the same time, she is too closely associated with her high-fashion personality Carrie Bradshaw from "Sex and the City". Selecting her to endorse sportswear basics just did not "feel" right, and the cold reception from the buying market mirrored this feeling.

Before you wade into the deep pool that is celebrity marketing, understand that while it's true celebrity sells, not all celebrities are going to be the most appropriate fit for your product or service. So, how do you go about choosing which celebrities are the best match for your brand?

Mortgage Lenders Under Government Scrutiny

Topping the list of institutions under fire are the familiar faces of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the poster children for good intentions gone bad. The government entities faced renewed federal scrutiny earlier this year. What to do with the troubled HUD groups, however, is still up in the air. The issue is delayed until after the current federal bank restructuring effort is completed, which is anticipated by year-end.

Reformation is definitely on the horizon for these two lenders. The Treasury Department is considering an expansion of options on guidelines officials released in June regarding both lenders. Privatization, nationalism, hybrid strategies are all being measured for reform.

Fannie and Freddie were taken into conservatorship by the federal government last year as the financial crisis spread. Governmental control seemed inevitable. If the two were to collapse, it was thought that the damage would be irreparable and more widespread and devastating than even the Lehman Brothers' failure.

Reform is critical, since these entities provide the majority of home loans in the U.S. The U.S. Treasury Department was authorized to purchase Fannie and Freddie mortgage securities through the end of this year. Legislation is anticipated to extend the Treasury's conservatorship through the end of 2010.

Wells Fargo, the receiver of $25 billion in bank bailout money, was the primary lender on two recently shuttered businesses in Alabama. Wadley company Plantation Patterns and Anniston corporation Anniston Sportswear both filed for bankruptcy, and Wells Fargo was the primary lender for both companies. According to federal statistics and a local mayor's report, a total of more than 660 jobs were lost in both closings. Birmingham-based Meadowcraft is the parent company of Plantation Patterns. Chicago-based Hartmax Corporation is the parent company of Anniston Sportswear.

Wells Fargo's apparent refusal to work with either business brought federal scrutiny. In two separate incidents, the lender was named by over 40 members of Congress in complaints written to Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner.

Not unfamiliar to federal scrutiny, Countrywide came under the federal microscope again last year, this time by a federal bankruptcy court official. Accused of destroying, losing or misplacing $515,000 in checks issued by homeowners, the home lender was further accused of adding inappropriate charges to the bankruptcy debt of homeowners.

Countrywide eventually worked out a deal with the court; however, the Justice Department challenged the settlement due to some unsavory terms presented by the mortgage lender. A non-disparaging clause was included, which caused the judge in the case to approve a probe of Countrywide's entire systems by the U.S. trustee.

Many mortgage lenders letting loans for reverse mortgages are now being examined under federal scrutiny. Some lenders responsible for predatory lending have now turned to high-pressure tactics and broad-yield premiums intended to rip off elderly homeowners. Michael S. Blume, U.S. Attorney, noted a dramatic increase in reverse mortgage loan numbers.

Bank of America and Wells Fargo, along with insurers like MetLife and Genworth, heavily invest in reverse mortgages worth about $17 billion annually. The FHA insures most reverse mortgages. Lenders are approved by HUD. Borrowers are required to meet with HUD-approved counselors prior to being approved for the reverse mortgage loan. New certification requirements have resulted in a reduction of counselors available nationwide, alongside an increase in the number of reverse mortgage loans.

The similarities of subprime loans to reverse mortgages are eerily similar in their predatory lending practices. Senior homeowners are strongly encouraged to avoid high-pressure sales that involve add-on products and services for reverse mortgages.

We live in day when everything is instant or at least very high speed.

I was brought up when the quickest way of cooking vegetables was in the pressure cooker. Coffee was instant but not as nice as it is today, and SA (staph) was a problem then as it resisted Penicillin and was about to start resisting the new antibiotic methicillin.

We want our instant solutions and easy ways out. We forget that a war is never won quickly, or easily. We play sports and our team and opponents are also colonized. We must get back into the habit of frequently washing our hands. When we sweat we must shower and wash our used sportswear before we reuse it or someone else borrows it. It is not an instant fix we are finding.

Then someone comes up with an instant fix. A new antibiotic or anti-bacterial to fix this MRSA and rid people of it. It comes onto the pharmacist's shelves and within a year it disappears. WHY? MRSA is cunning and will fight to stop being killed at all costs. For MRSA there are no tests to see if its reaction will hurt the person infected. MRSA's motto is "Survive at any cost". Within about a year the so-called miracle cure will probably be defeated.

This is giving the pharmaceutical companies a headache. They spend millions of dollars developing a new antibiotic to kill MRSA, and no-one will use it on large numbers of patients. You see as soon as the antibiotic is used on large numbers of patients there is a risk that MRSA will adapt to it and defeat it. So pharmaceutical companies are reluctant to produce new antibiotics as they are not cost-effective.

What does the future hold? It does not matter if we defeat MRSA or not the discipline of hand washing regularly and showering after activity will still be 100% necessary. The next bacteria will infect wounds and will fill the gap that the MRSA has left so get used to washing.

There are drugs being developed to prevent the MRSA virus causing infections, but they will take time to test and use, so be patient.

We're in that great time of year again when many of our favorite sports teams are gearing up for the season. It seems we've waited a long time through the hot summer months waiting for the crisp, cool days of early fall which would signal that it's time for the football teams to get back on the field and for we fans to get out our sportswear as prepare to cheer on our favorites.

Summer is great and we long for it's arrival each year but somehow it's just not with the same eager anticipation we feel as we get ready for the weekend college and professional games to begin. Now that your closet is free of clutter, it's time to get down to business. First stop, Career clothes. You wouldn't draft a proposal at the kitchen table while starting dinner; it's not a ten-minute task. Nor is the next step, which calls for a clear head, combed hair, make-up and underpinnings, along with a selection of daytime shoes. Get ready to try clothes on.

Your goal is to compile six great looks - a week's worth of outfits, plus a spare. Start with your special "meeting suit". Could be a skirt or pant but chances are, it's your most dressed up look. Slip the suit on with the tailored shirt or blouse you generally pair with it, and don't forget the shoes. Looks coordinated, professional, and great. This is outfit #1 - your gold standard.

Now take a look at the career shirt, blouse and sweater categories within your closet. Consider an alternate top, in another colour, and magically, you've created outfit #2. This is your spare - waiting in the wings for those unpredictable, spur of the moment occasions when you need a stress-free back-up.

Buying Ski Jackets - Prevent Getting Ripped Off!

When you have taken up an interest in buying a ski jacket, because you're going on a skiing trip perhaps, then you may want to keep a number of things in mind before you actually make your purchase. There are a number things to look at in any skiing jacket. It has to fulfill some criteria in order to pass as a high quality jacket that will last you at least a few years. You don't want to have to buy a new one every single season, do you? For this reason I have compiled a list of things to look for when you are out shopping for a good jacket.

1. Make sure that you look at jackets that have closed seams only. These type of seams can lock out the elements, such as wind, moisture, snow, rain, etc. Jackets that do not have closed seams are not nearly as durable or effective as jackets that do have them.

2. The jacket has to have a button enclosure and a zipper enclosure as well. This gives you that extra level of added protection. 5. Have a look at the sleeve construction. When you buy a ski jacket that has elastic sleeves, you will have high maneuverability during your skiing activities. Make sure the cuffs are on the outer side for maximum comfort around the wrists.

6. A good jacket has to have a few pockets here and there for you to place your belongings in. Most people these days want to carry at least a wallet and a cell phone with them. The pockets have to open and close easily while at the same being able to hold items in various sizes without those items bouncing around while skiing.

What Not to Wear - Golf Attire Mismatches

There have been many fashion trends in sports over the past few centuries. The changes from 1900 to 2000 were probably the most pronounced, from ridiculous basketball booty shorts to flirtatious tennis skirts. Most sports have only improved their active ensembles, and any female sportswear section will show you how important fashion is on the playing field. Women's sportswear has changed significantly from fashionable and uncomfortable, to comfortable and unattractive and has now found its niche combining comfort and fashion.

The biggest outlier in this fashion progress is most certainly the sport of-you guessed it-golf. Argyle, Plaid, and brightly colored polo shirts have certainly cornered the market in golf attire, but they have also cornered themselves on the outside of the fashion industry.

First of all, no one should ever wear those three trends at the same time. Argyle and plaid do not match, no matter what, and throwing a pastel purple shirt into the mix does irreversible damage to the ensemble! We understand that muted colors rarely find a place on the gold course, but just because argyle is accepted, do not think that a rainbow of bright patches on an argyle sweater is fashion-forward.

Plaid has been accepted as a fashionable patter on the gold course, and the country club, and even in general fashion. There are some plaid styles that will (hopefully) never be okay. If your plaid pants have more than 3 bright colors, you are probably in bad shape. Women are a little luckier in this area because they can wear shorter skirts and shorts, which means less surface area for the plaid, and is therefore more okay.

Brightly colored polo shirts and shorts have certainly found their way onto the golf course, and it doesn't appear that they are leaving any time soon. The only thing to really remember with a solid, brightly colored article of clothing is to leave it at that. Too often people will match an orange polo with and even brighter orange visor, and then perhaps some colorful shorts or pants with orange designs. This may technically match, but you will also look like you just escaped from James and the Giant Peach, or perhaps got in a pumpkin flinging contest, and you definitely lost. Keep it simple and keep it classy.

Career

Although Giorgio Armani is one of the most influential designers in the world, it was only by chance that he broke into the fashion industry. He studied medicine at Milan University for two years, made a brief foray into photography, then entered the army to complete his military service.

After leaving the army, he became a window dresser at the prestigious department store, La Rinascente in Milan. During this time, he travelled frequently to London, gathering inspiration, and developing the classic style that he has become renowned for.

Having gained a comprehensive knowledge of design and fabric he joined Nino Cerruti in 1961 as a designer for the menswear company, Hitman. He gradually adapted his designs for women, and his first womenswear collection was established a year later, in 1975, in partnership with Galeotti.

Since 1975, Armani has launched a number of lines, including Accessories, Giorgio Armani Junior, Swimwear, Underwear and Occhiali (eyewear). He has also added a number of cheaper diffusion lines such as Emporio Armani, Le Collezioni and Mani. Today, the Armani retail empire spans more than 35 countries and comprises some 280 stores with annual sales of more than $1 billion.

Fred Perry Clothing - A History and Informative Look at Britain's Biggest Fashion Brand

Fred Perry clothing is one of Great Britain's greatest contributions to the world. Started in the 1940's by three-time Wimbledon tennis tournament winner Mr. Fred Perry, over the past 60 years the brand has grown from its humble sportswear origins into a brand that is recognised and respected across the whole world.

The clothing brand started when, towards the end of the 40's, Mr Perry was approached by an ex-Austrian football player called Tibby Wegner. Wegner had developed a business mind after leaving profressional sports. He had developed a new type of sweatband, one that was much lighter and more flexible than all the others available at the time. Wegner wanted the new product to not only be endorsed by Fred Perry, but to carry his name. Mr. Perry accepted and the clothing brand was born.

The new style of sweat band was a massive success which was thanks in part to a very clever marketing campaign. The Austrian Businessman and British Tennis Player duo had further plans to expand the range of products available, but could not decide on a suitable logo. They both knew they wanted something that symbolised Fred's life, but it was a difficult choice. Mr. Perry was well known to the British public not only for his tennis playing; but also his colourful love life (he had a string of high-profile relationships with many women, four of which he married), he was part of the budding celebrity culture (glitterati was a popular term for this at the time) and was he beginning to be recognised all across the world, which is especially admirable as this was before the time of gossip-focused media and mainstream television.

Fred's idea for a logo was a pipe. He was a keen pipe smoker and felt this would make an ideal logo as it symbolises his personal life rather than his professional one. Tibby opposed this as he believed that it would be unpopular with Perry's growing number of female fans. Between them they rejected many more designs until they finally settled on the Laurel Wreath. This logo has stayed with the brand to this day, and has become synonymous with British Heritage, find sportswear, polo shirts and, of course, Wimbledon championship.

The bridge between sportswear and street designer clothing happened during the 60's and 70's. The Fred Perry polo shirts had a surprising cult following from the 'Mod' culture of the time, who found it to be a perfect shirt in which to go about their activities. The polo shirts were made out of a very durable material, dealt with perspiration effectively and were aesthetically pleasing. Retailers were soon receiving requests from customers to ask Fred Perry to create polos with more colour on them (at this point, they only came in white), especially around the sleeve tips and collar.

In 2009, the clothing brand received a surge in its popularity and interest when they sponsored up-and-coming Scottish tennis player Andy Murray. Many of the nation's rock and pop stars were also seen proudly wearing the label, including Gwen Stefani and Blur.

While the recent years' of Fred Perry styles remain true in spirit to the traditional looks and feel that they have been known for for over 50 years, they are in no way opposed to experimenting with different styles with collaborators. Many big designers have worked with Fred Perry on collaborations and have created some stunning contemporary takes on the usual styles. Raf Simons is a fine example of this. In his collaborative work, he has re-imagined the conventional looks with a different approach, such as by using metallic material for the polo shirts or creating slim fitting but wool-filled Harrington jackets.

While the concept of "ready-to-wear" was unknown then, boutiques were already making clothes known as being "for sport."

In the 1930s, Elsa Schiaparelli with Madeleine Vionnet rose to prominence. Both were known for their innovative designs while not shattering the fundamentals of fashion. The 70's was the decade of Disco. Major influences of the time originated in the 60's when hippies were still the vogue and very present in modern culture. It is well-known that when the United States participates in helping other nations into space, it makes friends and influences people. It prevents war, and conflict and trades that for friendly competition and the forward progression of mankind - a common cause to seek out and explore beyond. All good right? Well, not exactly, and let me explain.

You see the other day someone mentioned how the Space Race was uniting the human race, and yes, one can see that, but let me tell you of another revelation and observation when it comes to the so-called; Space Race. Well, we do not need to compete against the other nations, we need to compete against ourselves. It seems they are using our technology to do what we should have been doing all along.

Then steal whatever we do not give them, and use these space technologies to build weapons to threaten us - namely, making ICBM multi-stage rocket delivery systems to put nuclear tipped munitions on top. That doesn't sound like a smart game to me. The problem it seems is no one has any balls. They sit in committees second guessing themselves into paralysis, like a bunch of lawyers. Sometimes you just have to accept the risk and go for it. We must continue our space program, and it is okay to leave all the other nations in the dust.

We are under no obligation to share our technology or knowledge to quasi-future enemies. Indeed, I am not sure why everyone became such a bunch pansies all of a sudden. Everyone is acting like a little dog on the porch, but we are the greatest nation ever created in the history of mankind, it's time we start acting like it and stopped apologizing for it.

For those who are pro-space, I agree on this space thing, I am also very pro-DARPA and other innovative pushes as well. I believe our Department of Energy gets it, and is funding some good stuff too. Sometimes you just have to say; What the hell and take the risk. No risk, no gain - it's a reality, not just a Sportswear symbol.

We need to be very careful with our space program, as far too many of those technologies, materials, and that knowledge can be used to build weapon systems, which may in the future challenge us and/or our allies. In fact, it has already happened many times the prior, and I suspect someday we are doing to be more than sorry when the proverbial waste hits the spinning propeller blades. Please consider all this.

That could be the manifesto of more than one designer in Milan this week, but Zucchelli pushed the idea into otherworldly territory. He is the futurist of men's fashion, a Trojan horse, really, because he is using the umbrella of America's archetypal sportswear label to advance a vision of the way that men might ideally dress in a parallel universe. The twist in Zucchelli's tale is that, perfect though these creatures might be, they are not necessarily comfortable with what their future holds, hence mannequins who looked as awkward on the catwalk as could be expected after a thousand-year journey from another galaxy. At least Zucchelli gave them a wardrobe to wear when they landed. It's the designer's peculiar talent to warp familiar sartorial elements into something alien. This time, translucence was the key. The opening outfit set the tone: a transparent onyx parka over Lycra shorts, in keeping with what has become the Zucchelli tradition of extreme sportswear.
